Disease Testing

Here at Tikibird we take our bird's health seriously. All birds have been DNA tested for the "Four P'S", Pacheco's Disease, Polyoma, Psittacosis (Chlamydia Psittaci) and Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease (PBFD). NO BIRDS ENTER our aviary unless they test negative and are then clear a quarantine period.

Pacheco's Disease is a disease caused by a herpes virus. Infected birds may die suddenly or show nonspecific signs such as lethargy, anorexia, ruffled feathers, sinusitis and intermittent diarrhea. Urates may become green, indicating liver damage has occurred. The incubation period is thought to be as short as several days in some species of parrots.

Polyoma Disease is highly infectious and maybe able to infect most, if not all, of the parrot species. Baby birds are most subseptable to this disease and sudden death is sometimes the first sign of a problem. Although thought to be a baby bird problem the adults are the carriers of this virus and pass in onto their off spring.

PLEASE NOTE: all babies at Tikibird Aviary are vaccinated against Polyoma virus at 5 and 8 weeks, before leaving for their new homes. We can control the birds they come into contact here, but with some of these babies going into homes with existing birds, we do our best to ensure they will stay healthy.

Psittacosis (Chlamydia Psittaci), chlamydial infections in exotic birds represent a very common clinical problem. Signs range from acute devastating disease to poor feathering. When looking at the percentage of the exotic bird population found to be infected, only a small percentage show overt clinical signs of illness. Chlamydia Psitticai is one of the most prevalent infections in aviculture. Outbreaks of Psittacosis can quickly spread through an entire flock. Long term effects of chlaymdial infections can be multi-systemic, including afflictions such as liver disease.

Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease (PBFD) is a chronic disease characterized by feather dystrophy and loss, beak deformity and ultimately death. The cause of PBFD is a virus in the family Circoviridae. Most species of parrots are susceptible to the virus. Generally PBFD is a disease of young birds (up to 3 years of age) however, it has been reported in older birds. Many birds infected with PBFD die within 6 - 12 months of the onset of clinical signs, however some birds have been know to survive 10-15 years. Death usually occurs from secondary bacterial, fungal or viral infections.

We are very proud to have all birds testing negative for the "Four P's", it helps to ensure of flock stays healthy and any birds leaving the aviary are guaranteed NOT to be a carrier of these diseases.
